Ford patents pedestrian safety tech: Here’s how the ‘inflatable bumpers’ will save lives

American automobile manufacturer Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for its new pedestrian safetytechnology. The carmaker intends to introduce the technology in its large SUVs and trucks in its bid to protect pedestrians from serious injuries when they meet an accident with the vehicles. The system uses inflatable bumpers that deploy immediately after sensing an impact, much like how the airbags function.Ford filed the patent for this technology not long after it patented the shapeshifting bumpers months ago, Carbuzz reported.
How it works
The system will involve two bumpers, one that is conventionally found in the front fascia and another one which will be placed slightly beneath it. When an impact occurs, the bumpers will inflate and thus protect the knees of the pedestrians from serious injuries. Simultaneously, the other bumper will inflate too and will ensure that the person doesn’t go underneath the vehicle, thus keeping them from being driven over. It is worth noting that these bumpers will not serve as ‘cushions’ in cases of impact but will serve the specific purposes mentioned above.

The OEM is still in the stages of research and development of the technology and there’s no information available on when this system will be employed in the production cars. However, it is a positive step forward in the effort to reduce pedestrian accidents. If this technology does come in the production models and is found to be significant enough to enhance the safety of the pedestrians without compromising the design or capabilities of the vehicle, we can expect it to become a standard fitment in the models coming from the global markets.
