BSP Chief Mayawati Names Nephew Akash Anand As Her Successor

New Delhi: In a major development, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Sunday named her nephew Akash Anand as her successor in the unit, except for the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Mayawati will continue to monitor Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. Notably, the major announcement was made during the party meeting which was held in Lucknow today.

“BSP chief Mayawati has announced Akash Anand as her successor,” BSP leader Udayveer Singh, who attended the crucial meeting, told new agency ANI. He further stated that Anand would review the party’s presence and poll preparations where it is weak. “Behen ji would continue to lead the party in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, and Anand ji will lead the party in other states,” Singh said.

Akash Anand

Akash Anand had been considered as the successor to the BSP president, holding a key role in party affairs since the previous year. He is the son of Anand Kumar, Mayawati’s younger brother, who holds an important position in the BSP hierarchy, being regarded as next in line after “behen ji.” In 2019, Mayawati’s brother Anand Kumar was appointed as the vice-president of the party, while Akash Anand assumed the role of national coordinator.

Akash Anand became a part of the BSP in 2016, and was included as one of the prominent campaigners for his party during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Anand’s active involvement in Mayawati’s party, along with his padayatra in Rajasthan’s Ajmer in 2022, has gained significance in the party’s plans leading up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, which are just five months away.

The 28-year-old also participated in a 13-km “Swabhiman Sankalp Yatra” in Alwar marking the birth anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar. He was also seen in the party’s election campaigning 2019 in Rajasthan, garnering support for the Samajwadi Party-BSP-Rashtriya Lok Dal alliance.
