In 2023 too, Dubai and Bangkok were the top destinations for Indians | India News

MUMBAI: Dubai, is celebrated for its modern extravagance and attractions such as artificial islands, mega malls and majestic skyscrapers; while Bangkokwith its street food delights, bustling markets, temples like Wat Pho, nightlife along Khao San Road, were the top ranking number one and two destinations among Indian travellers in the year 2023, according to a year-end review done by a travel portal. The third most popular destination was Denpasar, the capital of Bali in Indonesia.
When it came to domestic travel, this year, more Indians opted for alternative, budget-friendly Indian cities that deliver on culture and cuisine, said Skyscanner. But airfares were high, especially in the second half of the year during tickets for travel from metros such as Mumbai, and Delhi to non-metros took the highest leap during the Dussehra, Diwali weekend.
According to Skyscanner data though, certain smaller destinations were an exception with cheaper flights. A case in point was Jagdalpur, in Chhattisgarh which was the cheapest flight destination of all with return flights costing just Rs 3,035 on average in 2023, it said. The destination is air-connected with Raipur and Hyderabad.
Among other aspects of travel this year was that 26 % of Indian travellers booked their flight and hotel tickets less than a week before travel, New Delhi was the top search destination and March was the most popular month for travel.
For international hotel stays, Nha Trang in Vietnam emerged as the cheapest city for a three-star hotel stay, for those travelling from India. “Doha in Qatar came out on top as the city with the cheapest car hire offering, with Indian travellers paying only Rs 2,198/day on average. Doha is an excellent starting point to embark on a road trip adventure, allowing travellers to traverse Doha’s modern marvels, visit iconic cultural sites, and delve into the desert landscapes,” it said.
Skyscanner’s Travel Trends and Destination Expert, Mohit Joshi, said: “As we reflect on the year of travel, it’s clear how Indians have embraced global exploration despite tightened budgets. We expect this momentum to only grow next year as the 2024 report also highlights that 86% of Indian travellers plan to take the same number, if not more, trips abroad in 2024 compared to 2023. We also predict Nice in France to be a great-value destination for Indian travellers in 2024, with airfares having dropped by over a third over the past 12 months.”
The company added that its popular money-saving tools Cheapest Month is back. With this it it easier to see the cheapest price per month and also the absolute cheapest month of the year to visit a destination when searching for ‘flexible dates’, it said, adding that traffic light colour-coding also makes it easier to spot the cheapest flight price within the search panel on their site.
