MUMBAI: A security guard, deployed at a construction site of the Bandra-Versova Sea Link, died on Friday after a speeding car hit him. According to a witness, the impact was so severe that Ramesh Gutukade, 45, was thrown nearly 50 metres away.
Bandra police tracked down and arrested the accused driver, Worli resident Neelam Shorewala,65, a few hours after she fled the spot near Nityanand Nagar.Police have towed the car to the police station. The woman was booked for rash driving and released on bail. A colleague of the deceased security guard had the presence of mind to click photos of the driver and the car’s number on his mobile when he saw her speeding away after the accident. Shorewala’s details were tracked down by the regional transport office (RTO) with the help of the photos.
Gutukade and his colleague Chandankumar Ram,24, employed by Apco Infratech Pvt Ltd, were standing guard when the accident occurred at 12.20pm. Gutukade was rushed to Bhabha Hospital in an office vehicle, but succumbed to his injuries, said a police officer. The guard lived with his family in Kurla. Gutukade and Ram were posted near the Rajiv Gandhi Sea Link bus stop for the past two and a half months.
“We were seated on a wooden bench near the entry point to the under-construction sea link. I had walked a few metres away to log the entry of a vehicle that had arrived with materials. Suddenly, I heard a loud sound. I turned around to see the wooden bench flying in the air. But I did not see Gutukade. Then I noticed he was lying some 50 metres away from the spot. I ran towards to him, he was vomiting blood,” Ram told TOI. “I had seen the woman driver briefly stop, but she fled as I ran towards the spot,” he said.
