Almost 40 bike models recalled over safety fears

Dozens of bike models sold nationwide have been recalled due to a fault which could cause the front wheel to fall off when it’s being ridden.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) issued a recall notice for several Avanti, Malvern Star, Raleigh and Diamondback bicycles supplied by Sheppard Cycles.

Thirty-eight bike models have been impacted, including the Avanti Giro F24, Malvern Star Attitude 20 and Raleigh Eliminator 20.

Only one Diamondback bike has been recalled — the Mason 27.5.

They were sold at Big W and independent bike dealers nationally and online between July 1, 2014 and November 16, 2023.

According to the consumer watchdog, the bikes don’t comply with the mandatory standard for bicycles.

There is a risk that the bikes’ front wheels may become loose and fall off if the quick release skewer, a mechanism used to attach a wheel to a bike, is not installed and tightened properly.

“There is a risk of accident and serious injury to the user if the front wheel comes loose or falls out while the bicycle is moving,” the ACCC said.

Consumers have been urged to “stop riding their bicycle immediately” and to contact Sheppard Cycles Australia Pty Ltd for a replacement skewer.

For consumers who bought their bikes from Big W, Sheppard Cycles will send the replacement skewer direct to the consumer.

If the bike has been bought at independent bicycle dealers, the supplier will send the skewer to the dealer who will then install it on the consumer’s bicycle.
