April Wine’s ‘distinctive’ frontman Myles Goodwyn dead at 75

April Wine frontman Myles Goodwyn, whose ‘distinctive’ voice and songwriting skills helped the rockers earn a place in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and on Canada’s Walk of Fame, has died. He was 75.

The I Like to Rock singer’s death was confirmed by publicist Eric Alper, who said that the cause of death and funeral details would not be shared at this time, citing a request for privacy from Goodwyn’s family.

“Myles Goodwyn’s voice is as distinctive and immediately recognizable as his songwriting skills are prolific,” Alper said Sunday on the social-media site X.

Goodwyn, who was born in Woodstock, N.B., and appeared on every April Wine release, formed the band with original members David Henman (guitar), Ritchie Henman (drums) and Jim Henman (bass). He also pursued a solo career when the band was on hiatus in the 1980s and wrote two books (the 2016 memoir Just Between You and Me and the 2018 fiction novel Elvis and Tiger.)

April Wine was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2010, while Goodwyn was the recipient of the National Achievement Award at the 2003 SOCAN Awards and an East Coast Music Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008.

The band picked up 11 Juno nominations, while Goodwyn also earned a nomination for his 2018 release Myles Goodwyn and Friends of the Blues.

Goodwyn stopped touring with the band this year, playing his final April Wine show March 2 in Truro, N.S.
