Battleground Telangana: Amit Shah sets target of 10 Lok Sabha seats, Congress gears up for 2024 challenge after assembly victory | India News

NEW DELHI: Telangana with 17 Lok Sabha seats will be a key state for both the Congress and the BJP as the two parties try and capitalise on the gains in the just-concluded assembly elections. The Congress after its impressive victory in the state will hope to consolidate, while the BJP, which made impressive gains, will go all out to improve its tally.
Union home minister Amit Shah on Thursday set an ambitious target of 10 Lok Sabha seats for the BJP in Telangana in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the saffron party had won 4 out of the 17 seats in the state.
“You have to work hard. The BJP is being seen as the state’s future. You have to ensure that at least 10 lotus blooms here,” Amit Shah was quoted as saying to the party workers.
At a meeting of ‘mandal’ presidents of the party from across Telangana, Shah claimed that the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) is a “sunken ship” and the state’s ruling Congress is a “sinking ship” while the BJP is Telangana’s future, party sources said.
In the assembly elections in the state, the BJP was relegated to the third position after the Congress and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). However, the BJP made considerable gains in vote share polling nearly 20% of the votes to win 8 assembly seats.
The party stood in the second position in as many as 19 segments while polled between 50,000 and 1,00,000 votes in 24 constituencies.
To boost the morale of party cadres, Amit Shah cited the example of Gujarat and said the party used to get less than 10 per cent of votes in the state before it emerged as a major force there.
Visiting the state for the first time after the recently concluded assembly polls, Amit Shah targeted the BRS and the Congress for their alleged appeasement and corruption and said “The government may have changed in Telangana, but it will not benefit the people.”
The BJP had emerged as the principal challenger to the BRS at one point of time after winning a couple of by-polls in Telangana and an impressive show in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation elections. However, despite an impressive show in the assembly elections, it failed to carry the winning momentum.
The Congress on the other hand will hope to improve its tally in the state after forming its first government. The grand old party had won 3 seats in the last Lok Sabha elections.
Telangana chief minister Revanth Reddy has exhorted Congress functionaries to work for the party for the next 100 days so that it can form government at the Centre.
Speaking at the ‘Hum Tayyar Hain’ rally in Nagpur to mark the 139th foundation day of the Congress, he said the next 100 days are crucial for the party and the country. Lok Sabha polls are to be held sometime in the first half of 2024.
“Inform your family members that you are taking leave and working for the party so that a Congress-led government can be formed at the Centre,” Reddy said.
The third key player in the state – K Chandrasekhar Rao-led Bharat Rashtra Samithi will be keen to repeat its 2019 performance in the state when it won 9 Lok Sabha seats. The party lost the assembly elections to the Congress, but will hope to improve its performance in the Lok Sabha elections.
