A woman died Monday after a driver hit her in the parking lot of a Walmart in Mountain View, a California city about 40 miles southeast of San Francisco, officials said.

“The parking lot at the time was dark and densely covered in fog,” the Mountain View Police Department said in a news released shared on social media.

Police received a report of the collision on the 500 block of Showers Drive at about 6 a.m. They rushed to the scene, and in the middle of the parking lot, they found a woman who had been run over by a Walmart employee who was driving to work, the police said.

The woman was taken to a local hospital, where she was later declared deceased, according to the news release. The woman has not been identified; she was described by police as being in her 60s.

The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. “Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the collision,” the police said.

“We’re heartbroken about what happened at our Mountain View store,” Walmart said in a statement. “We are working with police and refer any additional questions to them.”

The Bay Area has experienced foggy conditions in recent days, with the thick cloud cover hugging the ground and making driving difficult in the nighttime and early morning hours. The National Weather Service issued a fog advisory for parts of the region on Monday night; it’s in effect through 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Roger Gass, a forecaster with the weather service, warned that drivers may be in an area with no fog and then suddenly encounter a wall of fog.
