BJP likely to get posts of two deputy CMs, Speaker in Bihar | India News

PATNA: If Bihar CM Nitish Kumar resigns and joins hands with BJP-led NDA, it will be his second volte-face in less than 18 months and the fourth in less than 11 years.
JD(U) has 45 members in the 243-member Bihar Assembly. The support of BJP and HAM(S) will take NDA’s total tally to 127, which is five more than the halfway mark of 122. Besides, JD(U) also has the support of one Independent legislator, Sumit Kumar Singh, who is already a cabinet minister in the current Nitish-led government. With Sumit’s support, the total NDA tally will be 128.
As per the agreement reached between JD(U) and BJP, Nitish will remain CM and BJP will have two deputy CMs, just like the previous NDA government formed after the 2020 assembly polls.
The name of former deputy CM Renu Devi, who is from the extremely backward classes (EBCs), is almost final. The names of two former deputy CMs, Sushil Kumar Modi and Tarkishore Prasad, are being considered for the second deputy CM, a senior BJP leader told TOI.
The name of Union junior home minister Nityanand Rai may also be considered for the second deputy CM (from BJP’s quota), another BJP senior revealed.
The Speaker‘s post will go to BJP while cabinet berths and departments will be distributed in the pattern of the 2020 NDA government, BJP sources said. HAM(S) patron Jitan Ram Manjhi has demanded two cabinet berths.
BJP has convened a breakfast meeting at its office. The BJP legislators are to go to the CM’s residence at around 11 am and participate in an NDA legislators’ party meeting, a senior BJP leader told this newspaper.
JD(U) has convened a meeting of its legislators at 10 am at the CM’s residence. After this meeting, JD(U) legislators will join the NDA legislators meeting, which will begin at about 11 am.
Soon after the meeting, Nitish – accompanied by senior BJP, JD(U) and HAM(S) politicians – are to go to Raj Bhavan so that the CM can submit his resignation to the governor. Nitish is to also submit a letter of support from 128 MLAs , JD(U) sources said.
