Breaking! Kia Sonet, Tata Punch likely among first Bharat NCAP crash tested cars in India

The Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP) was launched by Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways earlier this year in a bid to promote safer cars in the country and help buyers make an informed decision while purchasing a new car. The commencement of BNCAP also marks the end of Global NCAP‘s ‘Safer Cars for India’ campaign’.
It has now come to our attention that the official Bharat NCAP website is now live, and while work is still unfinished with any crash test scores yet to be revealed, there are cues of two SUVs being among the first cars being tested – Kia Sonet and Tata Punch. Images uploaded on the BNCAP website reveal the entry-level Kia Sonet HTE variant being crash tested by BNCAP.

It should be noted that the Sonet hasn’t been crash tested by any other NCAP yet. On that note, the Kia sub-4m SUV is soon going to receive a mid-life makeover, with the global debut of the Sonet facelift set to take place tomorrow i.e. December 14. However, it is yet to be ascertained if the Sonet in the image is the pre-facelift or the upcoming facelifted model.

The Tata Punch was crash tested by Global NCAP back in 2021, receiving a five-star rating as per GNCAP’s older protocol. However, the Punch at the time did neither got a sunroof, nor was it equipped with curtain airbags as seen in the photo uploaded on the Bharat NCAP website. It is still unclear if the two vehicles have already been officially tested by Bharat NCAP, with no official comment from either companies or BNCAP. The time stamps on the images suggest that the images are from September this year.
