Canon Announces Flagship EOS R1

Canon has officially released its flagship full-frame camera aimed at professionals, the EOS R1. As promised in the development announcement in May, the camera is built around the DIGIC X processor and a newly developed image processor called the DIGIC Accelerator. We now know these are combined with a back-illuminated stacked 24.2-megapixel sensor. Canon says the gains in read-out speed “virtually eliminate” rolling shutter, with the EOS R1 delivering 40fps continuous shooting using the electronic shutter (full-resolution RAW images with full AF). The camera shoots up to 12fps when using the mechanical shutter.

According to Canon, the EOS R1 delivers “next-level autofocus,” with new subject tracking technology allowing you to maintain focus on a subject even when they are obscured briefly while shooting. The company says new focusing technology selects subjects according to movement and other factors “so you always get a great action shot.” The EOS R1 features a more-advanced version of Eye Control AF, introduced in the EOS R3. The system allows you to move the autofocus area to where you look in the viewfinder—and the feature is improved because the OLED EVF is now larger (0.9x vs 0.76x) and has a higher resolution (9.44M dots vs 5.76M dots).

On the video side, the EOS R1 can record 6K/60p RAW, 4K/120p (pixel binned), and 4K/60p (oversampled) video, all using the full sensor width. Unlike the EOS R3, the new flagship camera can capture Canon C-Log2. To cope with the high data rates, the R1 boasts two CFexpress Type B card slots. There’s also a full-size HDMI port.

Shipping in November, the Canon EOS R1 will retail for $6,300 (body only).
