Celebrity stylist Donny Galella on the staple clothes for men which are ‘all you need’ for spring, summer and Christmas

As we enter the busiest time of the year, there has been no better time than now – a month before Christmas – to rejig your wardrobe staples and start dressing to impress.

Celebrity stylist Donny Galella has shared his best fashion advice for the men in your life leading into the spring racing, wedding and holiday period.

When it comes to the “basics” men should always have in their back pocket the rule of thumb is simple: Focus on owning a few good quality, staple shirts.

“All guys need is a classic white, light blue and black shirt, plus a well fitting, light coloured suit, like a light blue, beige, or a light grey, and some chino pants in beige and navy,” he told Best Picks.

“You can’t go wrong with a crisp white shirt, chino and blazer combo for the spring/summer months and festive season.”

Donny recently styled one of his celebrity clients in this Van Heusen Linen Blend Suit in light blue, which is currently 25 per cent off at $224.25, proving you don’t have to spend all of your hard-earned savings to dress the part.

“Dress the blazer down with a T-shirt and chinos or wear it as a suit with shirt and tie for the races or a wedding,” he said.

He also likes this Slim Marl Puppytooth Jacket in Grey, which is also on sale until 11.59pm on November 6, because linen is breathable and light for the warmer weather.

“I would style this with a white T-shirt and black chinos for a Christmas party, or wear with a black collared shirt for a wedding or special occasion,” he said.

When it comes to choosing the best colour palettes to match together, Donny is a big fan of a classic beige jacket, light blue or chambray shirt, navy trousers and brown loafers.

You also can’t beat the navy trouser, cream blazer and crisp white shirt combo, paired with a pair of crisp white Adidas Stan Smith trainers.

“A light grey jacket, white shirt and black chino with a black loafer is also a winner,” he added.

The most common mistake the expert sees men make is wearing clothes that are far too big for them.

“Always make sure clothes are well-fitted. It’s always worth spending a few extra dollars to have clothes altered so they fit you perfectly,” he said.
