Cleaner dies inside Woolworths supermarket at Jesmond shopping centre in Newcastle

A cleaner for Woolworths has died at a supermarket in Jesmond, near Newcastle.

The woman from a third-party cleaning company was reported injured at the Blue Gum Rd supermarket about 7.30am on Friday morning.

Paramedics said the woman had suffered fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene.

Police say initial inquiries suggest there are no suspicious circumstances.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

Woolworths responds

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident and our thoughts are with the woman’s loved ones at this difficult time,” a Woolworths spokesperson told 7NEWS.com.au.

“We are assisting SafeWork NSW and NSW Police as well as working with our contract cleaning partner.

“Our priority at this time is providing support to the woman’s family and our store team members.

“The Jesmond store remains closed at this time.”
