In an attempt to combat the still incredibly high demand for the PlayStation 5, customers can now order the console directly from Sony.
Sony announced that customers still looking to purchase a PlayStation 5 can now register to buy the console directly from the publisher.
As revealed via a blog post on the official PlayStation website, fans who are still desperately wanting to acquire a PlayStation 5 will now be able to go through Sony itself. “This coming Holiday season, we will have a limited amount of PS5 Consoles available for customers in the US to purchase direct from PlayStation,” reads the post. “If you are interested in receiving an invitation, register below. If selected, we will contact you via email with instructions and details.”
It’s worth noting that registering to buy a PlayStation 5 isn’t a guarantee that one will be allocated for you. Sony explains that invitations will be sent out to people “based on previous interests and PlayStation activities,” while never elaborating further. To throw your name into the proverbial hat, you’ll need to sign in with your PlayStation Network ID, potentially explaining how Sony will evaluate engagement with the brand.
Despite launching in November 2020, the PlayStation 5 remains notoriously difficult to obtain. Due to increasingly high demand for the new-gen console and a stock shortage brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, the PS5 remains difficult to purchase. The device’s scarcity has been exacerbated by scalpers, who purchase the consoles in bulk and re-sell them with inflated prices, despite the best efforts of many retailers.
If you do manage to get a PlayStation 5 in time for the holiday season, you’ll have a decent selection of games to get through. Recent exclusive hits include Returnal, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Demon’s Souls and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. If those aren’t your speed, you can look forward to the eventual release of Horizon: Forbidden West, God of War: Ragnarok, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine.
