East Bay freeway shut down during law enforcement standoff with suspect

SAN LEANDRO — A Pleasanton homicide suspect was found dead Thursday afternoon from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside a vehicle on Interstate 580 after a standoff with police that shut down the freeway, authorities said.

The man’s name has not yet been released nor has the name of the woman he was suspected of fatally shooting.  Police have not yet  said what their relationship was.

Pleasanton police said the woman was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds about  11:10 a.m. Thursday  at  a residence on Saginaw Circle.

Authorities said the man was seen driving away from the residence by an unmarked Pleasanton police unit and was followed onto westbound I-580.

Officers pursued the vehicle until it became disabled  in the area of westbound I-580 and Benedict Drive about 11:20 a.m.

Officers from several departments responded to the scene, including some in an armored vehicle. At one point an officer could be seen firing into the vehicle, but it was not immediately known if the officer was firing bullets or another kind of projectile and Pleasanton police did not address that in their news release.

The release said that officers eventually  noticed there was no movement from inside the vehicle while attempting to communicate with the suspect. The release said officers approached the vehicle and discovered the driver was deceased from from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The  Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau was contacted about 12:25 p.m. and responded  to the scene.

Pleasanton police said  the investigation was still in its early stages and that more information would be released within the next 24 hours.

Westbound lanes of the freeway remained closed at 164th Avenue and eastbound lanes were closed at 150th Avenue as of 1:10 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said.

The CHP did not give a time when the lanes would be reopened.

This is a developing report. Check back for updates.
