F1 2022: Max Verstappen grabs pole in Mexico City GP ahead of Russell and Hamilton

While Lewis Hamilton led Q1 as well as Q2, it was Verstappen who went the fastest in Q3, sealing a pole position at the 2022 Mexican Grand Prix ahead of Mercedes drivers Russell and Hamilton in second and third respectively. A win at the Mexico City GP would see Verstappen cement a new record of the highest number of wins in a Formula 1 season.
Let’s take a look at how the qualifying of the 2022 Mexican Grand Prix went down at the 4.304 km long Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez circuit –

As mentioned earlier, Lewis Hamilton was the fastest in the first qualifying, 0.053s faster than Max Verstappen‘s Red Bull. Charles Leclerc ended up third ahead of Valtteri Bottas, while Carlos Sainz settled for fifth. Mick Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel, Lance Stroll, Alex Albon and Nicholas Latifi were eliminated from Q1.

Hamilton led Q2 again, with just 0.014s splitting the front four! Carlos Sainz was P2, just 0.008s behind the 7-time World Champion. George Russell went third fastest, while Max Verstappen took P4 going 0.001s behind the young Mercedes driver. Sergio Perez took fifth. Daniel Ricciardo, Zhou Guanyu, Yuki Tsunoda, Pierre Gasly, and Kevin Magnussen did not make it to Q3.

Max Verstappen managed to grab a pole position at the Mexican GP after going the fastest in the final qualifying with a lap time of 1:17.775. George Russell and Lewis Hamilton finished in P2 and P3 respectively, while Sergio Perez starts his home race from fourth. Ferrari drivers Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc took P5 and P7 respectively, separated by Valtteri Bottas. Lando Norris takes P8, Fernando Alonso P9 and Esteban Ocon will be starting from the 10th spot.
