‘Greatness of PM Modi that he gave ticket to a Nishad,’ Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti recalls her journey to becoming minister of state | India News

NEW DELHI: A 12-year-old whose family struggled to get two square meals despite toiling in irrigation canal construction work all day; living an unfulfilled dream of having a pucca house, to becoming the minister of state for food and public distribution and also the junior minister for rural development, a moving story of Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti was heard in rapt attention as she countered Congress charges against her govt during a special session on Ram temple construction in Lok Sabha on Saturday.
Recalling her journey, MoS Niranjan Jyoti said at the age of 12 she worked as a labourer in an irrigation project with her father and mother so that the family could get some foodgrains in exchange.
“Jawar used to be given those days. My mother made rotis out of them but the quantity of grains was not enough to make rotis for all, so my mother made daliya. It is PM Modi who ensured that no one slept without food even during the Covid pandemic,” the MoS for Food distribution said in Lok Sabha, countering Congress claim of eradicating poverty in the country.
Sadhvi Jyoti said she renounced the world when she was all of 14. “I left home in 1982, to become a sannyasin. My father worked at a brick kiln to run the family. Late Indira Gandhi had then come to Sumerpur (in Hamirpur district of UP). It was my first experience of a political speech. She promised houses for the poor, and not let anyone go hungry. We were simple people, and trusted her. I thought though I have left, but my father will now get a pucca house. Sir, this slogan continued till 2014, and it is my privilege today that poor’s daughter has been given the opportunity to give houses to the poor. It is being done with my signatures,” Sadhvi Jyoti told the 17th Lok Sabha during its last sitting.
Countering Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi’s charge of BJP govt’s discriminating policies against poor, the MoS asked: who gave this poverty? “If they had removed poverty, then we would not have had to give houses to 4 crore poor. Who are these people, they are shabri’s people, Nishad, Jatayu and others who have been given recognition by PM Modi following the principles of Lord Ram,” the junior minister for Rural development said.
“I come from a Nishad community to whom Lord Ram had addressed as the friend one should always have. It is the greatness of PM Modi that he had given ticket to a Nishad,” she said, asserting how the NDA government has strengthened the backward communities in the country.
The MoS recounted how Congress govt treated women, particularly those in Opposition. She recalled that her colleague in the Ram janambhoomi movement Sadhvi Ritambhara was arrested in Indore at 2 in the night by the then administration of Congress led by Digvijay Singh. “No female constable was present. I was arrested at 2:30 in the night..we were not allowed to relieve ourselves. Congress has no right to talk about Ram, when I think of these incidents,” Sadhvi said.
