Hollywood vs AI: This AI-generated song is in the race to win the Grammy

An AI-generated song that closely emulates the musical styles of Drake and The Weeknd, “Heart on My Sleeve,” has been submitted for Grammy consideration. While the track garnered popularity over the internet, it was soon taken down from streaming platforms. Although it may seem unlikely that such is possible, Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, confirmed to the New York Times that the song is eligible for consideration since a human wrote it.
The AI-generated track has been submitted for two Grammy categories: Best Rap Song and Song of the Year. These categories are focused on songwriters, not performers, so the song is eligible for consideration in these early stages. Ghostwriter wrote the lyrics for the tune, although the performances are computer-generated.
It is unlikely that “Heart On My Sleeve” will be nominated for a Grammy, especially since the Recording Academy is a part of the Human Artistry Campaign. According to the campaign principles, “AI can never replace human expression and artistry,” and performers’ and athletes’ voices and likenesses must be used only with their consent and appropriate compensation.
No artists duped by Ghostwriter seem to have consented to it. Despite this, the Recording Academy’s chief executive supports Ghostwriter’s work strongly and has praised it in an interview with The New York Times.
“I knew right away as soon as I heard that record that it was going to be something that we had to grapple with from an Academy standpoint, but also from a music community and industry standpoint,” Harvey Mason Jr., a producer who is the chief executive of the Recording Academy, said in an interview with The New York Times. “When you start seeing A.I. involved in something so creative and so cool, relevant and of-the-moment, it immediately starts you thinking, ‘OK, where is this going? How is this going to affect creativity? What’s the business implication for monetization?’”
Variety notes that for a song to earn a Grammy nomination, it must be widely available on most platforms, which is not the case for “Heart on My Sleeve” despite being eligible in terms of writers. So, the song would not even be nominated, let alone win a Grammy.
