Honda City only car to score 4-star GNCAP in 2022: Kia Carens manages 3-stars

Vehicle safety programme Global-NCAP released the crash test result for Kia’s latest MPV, the Carens on their website on June 23. The crash test results of the Kia Carens with 6 airbags showed that the MPV scored a safety rating of only 3-stars during testing. In comparison the fourth generation Honda City with just 2 airbags, is the only vehicle tested by Global-NCAP in 2022, to score a 4-star safety rating.

The programme also announced that the Carens scored just 3-stars for both adult and child occupants. The MPVs body shell integrity was classified as ‘unstable’. The driver’s chest and feet area was stated to have marginal and weak protection respectively. The Carens features 2 front airbags, 2 side airbags and 2 head protection airbags with ESC us standard.

Adult occupant excerpt:
The protection offered to the driver’s and passenger’s head and neck was good. The protection offered to the driver’s chest was marginal while passenger’s chest was good. Driver’s and passenger’s knees showed marginal protection as they can impact with dangerous structures behind the dashboard supported by the transfascia tube.
Child occupant excerpt:
The child seat for the 3-year-old was installed FWF with ISOFIX and top tether and it was not able to prevent excessive head excursion during the impact, offering poor protection to the head and fair to the chest

Meanwhile, Mahindra’s XUV700 managed to achieve its second ‘Safer Choice’ award by Global-NCAP. This comes after the Indian SUV scored a 5-star crash rating for adult occupants and 4 stars for child occupants in November 2021.

Overall, Global-NCAP has tested eight vehicles for the Indian market so far in 2022. Out of which the fourth-generation Honda City (2 airbags) has scored the highest with 4 stars. And the Nissan Magnite (2 airbags) and Renault Kiger (2 airbags) have scored the least at 2-star safety ratings.
