Last week, we clocked some not-so-subtle messaging from singer and makeup entrepreneur Ariana Grande—and this morning, her new single “Yes, And?” hit YouTube. Throughout the heavily hinted video, Grande rocked a singular eyeliner look that puts a fresh twist on the ‘60s-inspired flick she’s rocked for years.
“This shape and style is so graphic and bold,” says makeup artist Michael Anthony, who has worked with Grande to create versions of this beauty look for other videos and shoots (Hung Vanngo was the makeup artist on set for the “Yes, And?” video). “There are so many iterations of the style, and it’s a lot of fun to play with different configurations.” Previously, Grande has worn a thick white version for her “34 35” video and a more ethereal version in a R.E.M. Beauty campaign.
Here’s how Anthony has previously created the look with Grande:
First, you need the correct tools. Anthony “purchased fine liner paint brushes from the art supply store, and uses them with liquid liners and eye paints” to get that very defined, graphic line. But before he goes in with the bold liner, he starts by “sketching the shape with a nude pencil which follows the natural curves of the eye, aiming for just above the crease of the eyelid so you don’t lose any of the line when the eyes are open.”
After that, trace on top with your statement-making liner of choice, then use Q-tips dipped in Chanel’s Demaquillant Yeux Intense Gentle Bi-Phase Eye Makeup Remover (Anthony calls it “a perfect eraser”) for the clean up.
