India is importing red sanders from unexpected sources | India News

HYDERABAD: Despite the redwood being an endemic species to Andhra Pradesh’s Rayalaseema region, India is importing red sanders from unexpected sources like Malaysia, Myanmar, Slovak Republic and China.
Myanmar, Malaysia and China also serve as smuggling destinations for this prized wood, said sources.
While exports of red sanders have been fluctuating over the past decade, the Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS), a Delhi-based autonomous policy research institute, has thrown up interesting information on exports.
Apart from Andhra Pradesh, other states like West Bengal, Telangana and Tamil Nadu also export red sanders.
According to the data between 2006-2019, India had imported 2,871 cubic metres of red sanders from Malaysia, 700 cubic metres from China, 493 cubic metres from Myanmar, and 17 cubic metres from the Slovak Republic.
SK Mohanty, professor at RIS, said: “Import patterns of red sanders has been inconsistent.” To some extent, Japan, South Korea and the US also emerged as export destinations, Mohanty said, adding that most of the exports were in raw form as the value fetched is betweenRs 25-50 lakh per tonne.
“Those who purchase the seized red sanders from the govts of various states are exporting them in raw form, as they receive dividends immediately. They do not want to wait and process them. It is time value-added products were given importance and India can make more money,” Mohanty said.
Value-added products like musical instruments and furniture get more value in the international market, Mohanty said, adding, “We have not created infrastructure for exporting red sanders. We need precision technology and skilled artisans to cut and carve the wood into value-added products.”
