NEW DELHI: Zhongnanhai, a serene and picturesque garden in Beijing, has a rich history that dates back to its origins as part of the imperial gardens. Over time, it has transformed into one of China’s most significant and secretive political centers, housing the central headquarters for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the State Council.
The name Zhongnanhai, which translates to “Central and Southern Seas,” references the interconnected lakes that define the landscape of this historic site.Often compared to the Kremlin in Russia, Zhongnanhai serves a similar role in China’s political structure, functioning as the core of decision-making and governance, a CNN report said.
“Since 1949, an assortment of new architecture styles has encroached into Zhongnanhai, with a tennis court, gymnasium, swimming pools and other modern facilities being added,” reflecting the changes in political and cultural landscapes over the decades.
