'Kamala IS brat:' Harris supported by pop singer Charli XCX

(NewsNation) — Hours after getting the endorsement of President Joe Biden to be the 2024 Democratic nominee in the upcoming election, Vice President Kamala Harris received the backing of another influential figure: pop singer Charli XCX.

“kamala IS brat,” Charli XCX posted on social media Sunday evening.

“Brat” is the name of the singer’s critically acclaimed sixth album, which was released in June. On review aggregation site Metacritic, its boasts a score of 95 — with 100s from news outlets such as The Guardian and The Telegraph.

What does brat mean?

Merriam-Webster defines a “brat” as an “ill-mannered, immature person,” but Charli XCX and her fans have taken it upon themselves to reclaim the term.

Thanking fans on Instagram after her album came out, Charli XCX said on Instagram that she appreciated their support for her “at my most pure, my most charli, my most brat.”

In a TikTok video, Charli XCX expanded on this idea, saying that a “brat” is “that girl who is a little messy and likes to party and maybe says some dumb things sometimes, who feels like herself but maybe also has a breakdown, but kind of like parties through it — is very honest, very blunt. “

“A little bit volatile. Like, does dumb things. But it’s brat. You’re brat. That’s brat,” she went on.

Shortly after Charli XCX made her post, Harris’ campaign changed its cover photo on X to one mimicking the cover of “Brat” — including its recognizable bright green color.

Charli XCX said in her Instagram post that she and her team “narrowed down around 65 shades of green to the final most ultimate most brat green.”

This, as well as a number of memes bouncing around the Internet about Harris, have some saying that the Democratic vice president could have an edge with Gen-Z and millennial voters.

“The amount this single tweet may have just done for the youth vote is not insignificant,” David Hogg, founder of “A March for Our Lives” and president of Leaders We Deserve, which is dedicated to electing young progressives, said in response to Charli XCX’s post.

Charli XCX is British, meaning she can’t vote in American elections; however she has been vocal about US politics before, such as in 2022 when she spoke out against the overturn of Roe v. Wade.
