King Charles III diagnosed with cancer

(NewsNation) — King Charles III of the United Kingdom has been diagnosed with cancer, Buckingham Palace announced Monday.

“During the King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer,” the statement read.

The 75-year-old monarch has started a schedule of regular treatments and has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties, the palace said.

“Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual,” the statement continued.

The palace added that the king “has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.”

Charles departed from royal tradition with his openness about his prostate condition. For centuries Britain’s royal family remained tight-lipped about health matters.

He was admitted to the London Clinic on Jan. 26 for treatment of an enlarged prostate. He was seen walking out with his wife Queen Camilla three days later.

Charles became king in September 2022 when his mother Queen Elizabeth II died at the age of 96.

U.K. political leaders sent messages of support. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak tweeted: “Wishing His Majesty a full and speedy recovery. I have no doubt he’ll be back to full strength in no time and I know the whole country will be wishing him well.”

King Charles’ daughter-in-law Kate, Princess of Wales, also underwent surgery last month. Royal officials described it as a “planned” abdominal surgery that involved an extended hospital stay. She isn’t expected to return to public duties until April.
