Man arrested after four stabbing attacks in Melbourne overnight with one woman critically injured | Melbourne

A man has been arrested in Melbourne following a series of stabbings that left one woman fighting for life and three other people in hospital.

Police say three violent incidents in inner Melbourne are not believed to be terror related but were random attacks. Investigators were probing whether a fourth stabbing was also linked.

A Melbourne man, 24, was initially attacked outside a burger shop on King Street in the CBD at about 10pm on Saturday night, authorities said. He was taken to hospital with a leg injury.

An hour later, a man and a woman, both 31, were allegedly stabbed while walking along Dandenong Road in St Kilda East.

The St Kilda East woman suffered life-threatening injuries and the Glen Waverley man suffered a serious arm wound.

At about 12.30am on Sunday, a 31-year-old English national was attacked on Acland Street in St Kilda and taken to hospital with non-life threatening leg injuries, police said.

The alleged offender was later spotted by a protective services officer and arrested in South Yarra. The Melton man, 31, was assisting police with their inquiries.

Police are also investigating whether the incidents were linked to another stabbing attack on a 28-year-old Mount Waverley man at City Road in the CBD at about 9.20pm on Saturday.

Detectives stressed there was no further danger to the public and they were not looking for anyone else.

Anyone who saw any of the attacks was asked to contact investigators, particularly a woman who may have seen the Southbank stabbing but left before speaking to police.

In an unrelated matter, homicide detectives are separately investigating after a man was shot dead in Melbourne’s north.

The man was found on Middlemount Street in Donnybrook at about 4.20am on Sunday. Emergency services performed CPR but he died at the scene.

Authorities were yet to release any identifying information about the victim.
