Bengaluru: A 23-year-old woman and her nine-month-old daughter who arrived in Bengaluru after celebrating Deepavali in Tamil Nadu were charred to death early Sunday when they accidentally stepped on a live wire left abandoned on a pavement on Whitefield Main Road, barely 100 metres from power utility Bescom’s office.
Her husband, who was walking a few steps away from her, made attempts to save his wife and daughter.He suffered electrical shocks trying to do so. The deceased woman was identified as Soundarya and daughter as Suviksha Liya. Husband Santhosh Kumar, 24, is a salesman in a furniture showroom.
Energy minister KJ George announced an inquiry and suspensions of three Bescom staffers — the lineman, assistant engineer and assistant executive engineer. He said the government will pay Rs 5 lakh in compensation to the family.
Shivakumar Gunare, deputy commissioner of police (Whitefield), said a case of negligence causing death had been registered against five Bescom officials. They were arrested and released on bail. The Bescom officials told police they had not been alerted about the snapped wire. Locals claimed the wire had been lying since 1.30am.
Husband Santhosh Kumar told TOI: “I never thought a city like Bengaluru and the area where a large number of software companies are located will face such negligence with electric wires lying snapped on pavements. My wife failed to notice the cable because it was very misty early in the morning.”
Soundarya’s brother Suresh S said his sister had gone to her in-laws’ home in Tamil Nadu’s Cuddalore district for Deepavali and returned to Bengaluru Sunday morning. Soundarya’s parents live in AKG Colony, about 1.5km from the pavement she was electrocuted on.
With Santhosh Kumar walking behind, Soundarya, carrying Suviksha and a bag, stepped on the 11kV wire. Moments later, Soundarya’s clothes caught fire, and she and her kid died. Residents and local organisations protested at the site later in the day. “The executive engineer too should be suspended. If proper action is not taken, then we’ll stage a protest in front of (minister) George’s residence,” said Murugesh, founder of Bheem Praja Sangha, Whitefield.
