It is finally over. The Detroit Pistons’ NBA-record 28-game losing streak finally came to an end on Saturday night with a 129-127 win over the Toronto Raptors.
It is the Pistons’ first win since Oct. 28, more than two calendar months, when they defeated the Chicago Bulls by a 118-102 margin to improve their record to 2-1.
Twenty-eight losses later they are now 3-29, the worst record in the NBA.
They did not make it easy on themselves, either.
Despite owning an 11-point lead with five minutes to play in the fourth quarter, the Pistons still had to cling to the lead down to the very end and gave their fans a massive scare that yet another loss could be on the horizon. But they were able to hold on for the win.
Cade Cunningham led the win with a team-high 30 points.
Just for some perspective on how long it has been since the Pistons actually won a game, the World Series was still being played and the Arizona Diamondbacks had won a game more recently than them.
Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah and Christmas all happened. The NFL’s Detroit Lions won six out of their eight games and secured their first division title in 30 years while the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings won 12 games.
In other words, it has been a while. Now they have a win and can start putting that infamous piece of NBA history behind them.
