Toronto is now a city where it is no longer safe to walk your dog.

But while this is a bad news story, it is also hopefully going to end up being good news, too. Every dog has its day. Certainly, Edgar the Pomeranian is living proof that not just cats are blessed with nine lives.

A random thug may have been able kick this beautiful dog when he was down, but that didn’t keep him down.

Not only did Edgar, a 12-year-old Pomeranian with a heart condition, get back up after he and his female foster mother were gutlessly attacked this month, but despite being booted into the air he refused to back down and protected the woman by barking at the thug until he scrammed.

“His bravery is commendable,” the Toronto Human Society said Wednesday. “Instead of running off, he stayed and waited by her side.”

This happened at 5 a.m. on Aug. 14 in Regent Park, where the woman was taking Edgar for a morning stroll.

“His foster parent was mugged and beaten up,” said the THS. Little Edgar was determined to protect the lady, they added, but “the attacker also kicked him and sent him flying.”

The woman was taken to a hospital and Edgar was checked out by THS veterinarians.

Toronto Police Const. Sinderela Chung said the woman is recovering from non-life-threatening wounds and the horrific assault is being investigated.

And poor Edgar is back at the humane society healing from his wounds.

“Thankfully nothing was broken, although he did have some bruising,” said the THS. “When our team followed up with his foster parent, they commented that he was brave and has a good sense of judgment.”

But now this courageous little pooch as no home.

THS spokesperson Lucas Solowey said he’s been sent to another foster home with the hope that somebody can permently adopt this little hero.

“This courageous, senior gentleman is looking for his forever home. He loves cats, car rides (with a booster seat so that he can see out of the window) and most importantly he loves his people,” said the THS.

But, the THS reminded, he’s not a puppy.

“Caring for a senior companion like Edgar will require extra care, including daily medication and a relationship with a veterinarian,” said the THS. “However, in return he’ll shower you with unwavering love and steadfast companionship. If you’d like to provide this big-hearted little guy with a forever home for his golden years, we invite you to visit us at 11 River St.”

I am hopeful this column will help Edgar find a sanctuary.

However, I am not forgiving toward the person who did this to the woman and to this tiny, harmless dog. I want this person caught, prosecuted and jailed instead of easily bailed.

While Mayor Olivia Chow was seen on social media showing that swimming and pool times are some of her priorities, I remind her and the rest of the failing city council that Toronto is out of control in terms of crime and you all have your heads in the sand and are responsible for the mayhem.

The leftist spin that violent crime is down is nonsense. Everybody who lives in the city knows it.

How many more innocent people and pets have to be randomly attacked, wounded or murdered before Chow and the rest of the pretenders at City Hall acknowledge the sorry state Toronto has become? This woman did not die, so we in the media did not hear about it. If the humane society doesn’t go to social media with Edgar’s story, no one would have known. He could have died and the foster mother could have, too.

In a year when we have had a 16-year-old kid stabbed at a subway station, a mom shot outside a drug injection site, a former CBC producer pushed to his death on the Danforth, an elderly woman shoved to her death on Yonge St. and countless stabbings and muggings on the TTC, it’s clear things are at the crisis stage.

Anybody can be attacked at any time. We have seen this countless times from radio hosts like NewsTalk 1010’s John Moore and his producer Joe Cristiano to car thefts of Maple Leafs legend Mitch Marner or former Toronto cop and mayoral candidate Blake Acton.

Now it’s a woman walking a foster dog. It’s obscene!

While the woke powers-that-be focus on changing the names of streets for political correct points, they don’t seem to care about the people wounded or slain because of the violent offenders walking the street.

Perhaps a tough but kind little Pom named Edgar will wake them up and be an old dog that can teach Toronto some new tricks.
