After many taunts and jibes, Apple has got Google’s message, and it is ‘fixing’ the texting on iPhones, as it adopts the RCS (Rich Communication Service) standard for texting next year. And no one else could be happier than Google, as it ran a campaign for years for Apple to #GetTheMessage.
Currently, texting with an Android user through iMessagehas several limitations, including disorganised group chats and lower resolution for image and video sharing.RCS resolves these issues and introduces other benefits, such as location-sharing and read receipts between iPhones andAndroids.
Adopting RCS is going to lift many of these limitations, and Google could not welcome the move more.
“Everyone deserves to communicate with each other in ways that are modern and secure, no matter what phone they have. That’s why we have worked closely with the mobile industry to accelerate the adoption of RCS, and we’re happy to see Apple take their first step today by coming on board to embrace RCS. We welcome Apple’s participation in our ongoing work with GSMA to evolve RCS and make messaging more equitable and secure, and look forward to working with them to implement this on iOS in a way that works well for everyone,” said a Google spokesperson in a statement.
In a post on the social platform X (formerly Twitter), Google’s Android handle said, “We believe everyone deserves to communicate inclusively no matter what phone they have. This is one huge step closer to doing that. Excited for Apple to embrace RCS, the modern industry standard, to help make messaging better for everyone.
While it may seem a win for Google and other Android manufacturers, it is not that easy. Well, the blue and green bubbles are here to stay, and RCS will not replace iMessage; as Apple argues, iMessage is still safer and much more private. The RCS on iPhones will not support end-to-end encryption, as it does on Android. However, it hopes to work with the GSM Association to add encryption to the standard.
