Stock market today: Sensex closes at 73,158.24 points; Nifty hits all-time high

NEW DELHI: Banking stocks Nifty closed at all time high level by gaining 180.1 points to 22,235.15 on Thursday, while Sensex increased by 535.15 points to close at 73,158.24.
Both Indian indices opened marginally higher, showing signs of recovery after breaking a six-session winning trend but the two indexes were down about 0.8% earlier in the day, before reversing course in the final two hours of trade.
IT stocks jumped 1.94% after shedding 2.8% in a three-session losing run. HCLTech, TCS, Bharat Tech, Bajaj Auto and Eicher were among the top Nifty gainers while Induslnd bank, IOCL, Bajaj Holdings, HDFC were losers.
On Wednesday, the Sensex and Nifty halted their six-day winning streak. The Sensex dropped 434.31 points to settle at 72,623.09, while the Nifty saw a decline of 141.90 points, closing at 22,055.05.
Despite a collective advance of 2.7% in the past sessions, market participants decided to cash in on the recent gains, leading to a downturn in market performance.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) emerged as net buyers, acquiring securities worth Rs 284.66 crore.
On the global front, Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 index surpassed its 1989 record, closing at 39,098.68, up 2.2%. The index had been near 34-year highs for weeks. Its previous record was set at 38,915.87 on Dec. 29, 1989.
