Terrifying moment 7NEWS reporter flees Hamas air strike overhead

Hamas missiles continue to fire over Israel, despite Gaza being flattened by the Israeli Defence Force bombardment that plunged Palestinians into darkness and cut them off from telecommunications, fuel and water.

7NEWS US bureau chief David Woiwod was reporting from Sderot, near the Gaza border in Israel’s south, in a live cross on Monday when he quickly ducked and fled for safety from a missile overhead, as an air strike siren rang out just after 5am AEST.

Woiwod was explaining the IDF presence on the ground in Gaza and pointing to flares lighting up on the horizon, before he was cut off mid-sentence by the warning siren.

“In fact, I think we might have to go now, guys. We gotta go. F***,” Woiwod said as he ducked and ran out of the frame to safety.

The explosive sounds of the air strike ended the live cross, which returned to the wide-eyed Seven Early News hosts in the studio.

Israel is largely protected by its Iron Dome, with a reported 97 per cent success rate, which detects and intercepts rockets in the air with counter-missiles.

But the direct interception creates loud, explosive noises that can often be heard and felt from the ground.

Woiwod explained the Hamas missiles are flying over Israel every few hours.

“You only have a few seconds to react here,” Woiwod said when it was safe to continue reporting.

“That is why these towns here on the Gaza border have been evacuated.”

But the level of displacement is far worse in Gaza, where the slow restoration of telecommunication connections means the extent of recent damage is yet to become apparent, he said.

“The humanitarian crisis on the ground now, it is absolutely dire. A few hours ago, in fact, 10 trucks worth of aid actually passed over the Gaza border but it is just a fraction of what is needed right now,” he said.
