The 49ers-Eagles lovefest is getting to be a bit much

The Eagles may have taken it a little too literally. Now, the buildup to the NFC championship game has been incredibly boring. Can’t Sunday get here already?

In the days leading up to Cowboys-Niners, the ‘Boys were protesting a bit too much, and it made its way out to Santa Clara. “I’m super excited,” all-world Cowboys defender Micah Parsons said of playing the Niners. “This is who I wanted.” For his part, Mike McCarthy was shocked that the Cowboys were underdogs against a team that hasn’t lost since October. “We’re underdogs?!,” a surprised McCarthy said when he learned the spread.

“I’ll just say this: We’re nobody’s underdog, so, if you need a quote,” he added.

The Niners did indeed need a quote, and they reveled in shoving it back in the Cowboys’ faces after another hilarious playoff elimination. This week, the Eagles have appeared extremely determined to leave the bulletin board bare.

It started with head coach Nick Sirianni on Monday, who rained praise on Brock Purdy, Kyle Shanahan and DeMeco Ryans. It got so bad, he threw in Brian Hoyer for good measure. “He’s a winner,” Sirianni said of Purdy. “… a quarterback that can lead the way and find the right place to go with the football consistently, who’s just a playmaker.” Shanahan was “a great offensive coordinator, a great offensive mind. … I just remember how highly Brian Hoyer thought of Kyle.”

It was defensive coordinator Ryans, though, who elicited the most respect from Eagles staffers. “I see his players genuinely selling out,” Sirianni said of Ryans. “You see those guys playing really hard for him.” Eagles special teams coordinator Michael Clay overlapped with Ryans on the San Francisco staff from 2017 to 2020, and he took it even further. “He’s so smart, and you can throw any concept at him, and he’s going to get it within two to three minutes,” Clay said of Ryans. “… I think DeMeco, whatever route he took outside of football, he was going to be successful, whether that be in football or a Fortune 500 company. I thought anything he would have done would have been great.”

Annoyingly, the 49ers have returned the favor. “There’s a reason that they’ve been the best in the league so far throughout this whole year, offense, defensive, special teams,” Shanahan said Monday. “Last year we were really concerned going into the game playing them.” (The 49ers beat the Eagles 17-11 in Week 2 of the 2021 season.)

George Kittle laid it on thickest of all. “To go into Philly, which is a fantastic atmosphere … It’s going to be wonderful. I know how much the fans love the opposing team,” he said on Sunday after the matchup was set. “It’s going to be cold and violent and it’s going to be a blast.” Two of those three are provably false

Come on! Can someone, please, tell them that cheesesteaks are odious, Eli Manning has been right all these years, and there are right and wrong ways to say “water”? We’ve got four more days of stories to produce here!
