The top three PV performers as per the vehicle retail data, were Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, Hyundai Motors India Ltd and Tata Motors Ltd. However, Tata Motors is the only automaker which has gained market share in September 2022 at 13.98 percent from 10.05 percent in 2021. The total market share for Maruti Suzuki India Ltd dropped from 41.80 percent in 2021 to 39.88 percent in September 2022. A similar trend was seen in Hyundai Motors India Ltd market share, which dropped to 15.01 percent in September 2022, a more than 2 percent fall from 2021’s 17.44 percent market share.

While most categories did see positive growth in September 2022, vehicle retail data shows that demand from rural states has gotten weaker, especially in the entry level 2-wheeler and passenger vehicle segments.. These states include Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand. With the upcoming festive season, the industry expects PV retail to touch a decade high, however, it is the 2-wheeler category where the automotive industry continues to pin its hope for showing healthy growth.
