UK PM Rishi Sunak Sacks Indian-Origin Home Secretary Suella Braverman; Here’s The Reason

London: In a major development, UK PM Rishi Sunak has sacked Indian-Origin Home Secretary Suella Braverman for her controversial remarks on the ongoing Israel-Palestine war. Under fire from opposition lawmakers and members of his own governing Conservative Party to eject Braverman, Sunak moved against his interior minister, asking her “to leave government” which she had accepted, the source said, as per the news report carried by news agency Reuters.

Foreign Secretary James Cleverly would replace her. As Sunak started to reshuffle his ministerial team, former prime minister David Cameron was seen walking into Downing Street, sparking speculation that he would return to government, the report said.

Suella Braverman was appointed Home Secretary by former Prime Minister Liz Truss in September 2022. However, she was forced to resign just a few weeks later after it was revealed that she had sent an official document from her personal email address. This was a serious breach of ministerial rules, and it led to calls for her resignation from both within and outside of the government.

Home Secretary Suella Braverman’s Controversial Remarks On Ongoing War

Last week, Braverman defied Sunak by publishing an article accusing the police of adopting “double standards” in its treatment of protests—an argument opposition Labour said inflamed tensions at a pro-Palestinian demonstration on Saturday.

Then more than 140 people were arrested after far-right counter protesters skirmished with police, who tried to keep them away from the 300,000 pro-Palestinian marchers.

Sunak is expected to carry out a wider number of changes in his cabinet, bringing in allies and removing some ministers who, his Downing Street office says, have not been performing as well as he wanted in their departments.

Suella Braverman’s comments about the police handling of protests were criticized for inflaming tensions and encouraging right-wing protesters to take to the streets of London. This put pressure on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to take action against her.

Earlier, Reuters reported that British PM Rishi Sunak sacked Home Secretary Suella Braverman today following comments she made last week about the police’s handling of a pro-Palestinian march.
