Gatherings at the galleries
A collective of some of Hong Kong’s leading art galleries will jointly host the 2019 edition of Hong Kong Art Week. Divided into three main events, HKAW will kick off with a night of gallery hopping through Central, Sheung Wan and Sai Ying Pun, where many galleries will hold opening receptions featuring artist appearances, workshops and live performances. The following days will see galleries in Wong Chuk Hang and Tin Wan offering light snacks and refreshments to accompany visitors viewing the artworks. The week will end with a two-day art symposium comprising of discussion panels, presentations and documentary screenings on Hong Kong’s art scene, including the role of art criticism, advice on gallery sustainability, and more.

A digital dance
Singing Chen’s Afterimage for Tomorrow combines virtual reality and dance in this experimental 18-minute film and dance installation. Chen, a filmmaker from Taiwan, merges these multimedia elements to explore the “inexpressible vastness of human emotion in the moments of limbo before death.” Donning a VR headset, audience members can interact with their virtual surroundings.

Painted illusions
The paintings of American artist Al Held are on show in Hong Kong for the first time. Though frequently grouped with the abstract expressionists, Held was significantly younger than his counterparts and continued to rapidly evolve in style throughout his career. He is mainly known for his op art and hard edge paintings, which are inspired by Renaissance art and reveal a deep understanding of spatial complexity.
