Woman Matthew Perry dined with day before death weighs in on ‘cry for help’ posts

A series of haunting final posts by Matthew Perry before his death had been seen by some Friends fans as a “cry for help” – and now the woman who dined with him hours before his passing has weighed in.

Although Perry had been largely silent on Instagram since April 2023, he shared nine posts in the weeks before he died, many of them related to the comic book hero Batman.

In fact, the 54-year-old referred to himself several times as ‘Mattman’, and his continuing use of the Batman trope had started to concern some of his fans.

This was partly because the Batman symbol in the sky is known as a distress signal as a means to summon the superhero.

And ‘Batman’ was also the title Perry gave to the final chapter of his memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing.

“I think he’s trying to tell us something,” one fan declared on Instagram at the time. “Is he signalling he’s in his final chapter?”

Now, the woman Perry dined with the day before his death has weighed in on the conspiracy theories.

Athenna Crosby was pictured having a meal with the actor on October 27, just hours before he was found dead in the hot tub at his Los Angeles home.

Crosby told TMZ the Friends star was really into Batman – and he was playful in the months that she knew him.

“Matthew was very sweet and a little bit nerdy,” Crosby told TMZ.

“He loved Batman. He called his car the Batmobile because it was all tinted black and had matt paint on it just like the Batmobile.

“He had been calling himself ‘Mattman’ lately which is a nickname that he dubbed for himself and he was really goofy and playful.”

She labelled as “completely false” the notion that the posts were any kind of cry for help.

“I think people assuming that his posts about the bat signal, or the fact that he’s Batman, were some sort of subliminal messages to ask for help, that’s just completely false,” she said.

“He was just a sweet nerd that liked Batman and none of that was subliminal messaging in any way.”

Crosby, 25, an entertainment reporter and model, previously said Perry was in “good spirits” during their final encounter.

The pair dined at Hotel Bel-Air on Friday and she emphasised that Perry “talked to me enthusiastically about things he had coming up”.

Crosby broke her silence after TMZ ran the photos of their lunch.

“Once again I never intended to say anything but since I have been identified, yes that is me with him this past Friday,” she began in an Instagram story.

“I want to emphasise that Matthew was in extremely good spirits and talked to me enthusiastically about the things he had coming up in his life.

“He was so happy and vibrant.”

“Please refrain from any speculation surrounding his death and know that the man was on a comeback and truly deserved more time on this earth.

“Our entertainment industry has truly lost a legend. RIP.”

Meanwhile she wrote in a separate Instagram story: “I am so devastated from his death but felt it was in poor taste to talk about it publicly as the attention should not be on me but rather on him and his legacy and he was an extremely private person and I always respected that in our friendship.

“But indeed, we were friends and I was one of the last people to speak to him and see him before he passed.”

Initial autopsy results showed Perry’s death was not the effect of a fentanyl or meth overdose, TMZ reported.

More test results are expected in the coming months to determine if any illegal or prescription drugs were in his system when he died.
