World Cancer Day-eat organic food to keep safe: Doctors | India News

BENGALURU: How many vegetables and fruits do your children eat daily? Conversations on this could tear families apart.
Children should be encouraged to eat right as processed food is one of the most neglected causes of cancer, said experts. “Anything which is not real food is processed food,” explained Dr Prasad Narayanan, senior consultant and director, medical oncology, hemato oncology and BMT, Cytecare Cancer Hospital, Bengaluru.
“Anything that repeatedly produces oxidative injury could irritate the cells, leading to their proliferation,” said Dr Sharat Damodar, chairman-oncology services and oncology collegium, Narayana Health City, adding that chronic smoking and alcoholism also produce oxidative injuries.“Those cells repeatedly exposed to these particular elements get kicked into abnormal proliferation. People who eat charred and burnt foods could be at a higher risk for colon cancer.”
Eat organically grown foods as much as possible. Insects don’t survive on foods available in the market as they are laced with pesticides. “No matter how much you wash the vegetables, the pesticides don’t go away. Repeated intake of such fruits and vegetables could trigger cancer,” said Dr Damodar.
