Zac Efron shocks fans with unrecognisable new look: ‘What happened to his face?’

Zac Efron has confused some of his fans after a recent clip of him talking about his new movie appeared online.

It seems some of the actor’s fans had trouble recognising the actor compared to how he used to look.

Last year, rumours began swirling that the heartthrob had had plastic surgery last after his facial appearance seemed to change.

And in the new video shared to Entertainment Weekly’s Instagram page, in which Efron and his co-stars talk about their new wrestling film The Iron Claw, many fans remained perplexed.

“What happened to his face?” one person wondered.

“His face is huge now,” wrote another, while a third said his face “didn’t move” when he spoke.

“What happened to his jaw?” asked one fan.

Another, somewhat unkindly, said Efron now looked like Lord Farquaad from Shrek, who has an exaggeratedly square jaw.

However, Efron has already spoken about the changing shape of his face.

In October last year, he told Men’s Health magazine that he had broken his jaw in an accident at home.

He was running through the house in socks when he slipped, shattering his jaw after smacking his chin on the granite corner of a fountain.

Efron said he lost consciousness and woke up to “his chin bone hanging off his face”.

He had to have jaw surgery followed by physical therapy.

During his recovery, he explained, some of his facial muscles began “overcompensating” for the injury.

His facial muscles “just grew” and “got really, really big”, he said.

The 36-year-old admitted that he didn’t know about the plastic surgery gossip until his mother called him and asked him about it.

He added that he didn’t care if people still believed he’d had plastic surgery for cosmetic purposes.

“If I valued what other people thought of me to the extent that they may think I do, I definitely wouldn’t be able to do this work,” he said.

Efron’s good friend, radio host Kyle Sandilands, once vouched for the fact that Efron hadn’t had cosmetic plastic surgery.

Speaking on the Kyle and Jackie O Show when the rumours first appeared, Sandilands – who has known the star for years – said he “would know” if Efron had gone under the knife.

He added that it would be ridiculous for someone like Efron to have plastic surgery because he was already so handsome.

“It’s like getting a Picasso and getting a kid to finger paint all over it,” Sandilands said.

“Why bother?”

Efron’s film The Iron Claw also stars Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson and Stanley Simons as a band of brothers who become huge wrestling stars in the 1970s.

It’s based on the true story of professional wrestler Kevin Von Erich (played by Efron) and his family.

Facial changes aside, Efron worked on physically transforming his body for the demanding role.

When set photos emerged during filming last year, the actor looked virtually unrecognisable, sporting a 70s bowl haircut and massive biceps.
